Bury Me Beneath The Willow
by Brandley Kincaid

"This was a song we've known all our lives. We used to sing it when we had get-togethers and parties. It was the first song we recorded in 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee, for RCA Victor."
— Mother Maybelle Carter of the original Carter Family

Bury Me Beneath The Willow

Bury me beneath the willow
'Neath the weeping willow tree
When he hears his love sleeping
Maybe then he'll think of me.
My heart is sad and I am lonely
Thinking of the one I love
Will I see him never, never
Till we meet in heaven above.
He told me that he dearly loved me
How could I believe him untrue
Then one day some neighbours told me
"He has proven untrue to you."
Place on my grave a snow-white lily
To prove that I was true to him
And tell him that I died to save him
When his love I could not win.
Then bury me beneath the willow
'Neath the weeping willow tree
And tell some brown-eyed boy I'm sleeping
Then perhaps he'll weep for me.
