Cimarron (Roll On)
by Johnny Bond
"In 1938, the Jimmy Wakely Trio, of
which I was a member, was broadcasting 'live' on Radio
Station WKY, Oklahoma City. As was out custom, we always
opened out shows with a fast, rollicking, upbeat type of
western song, since it was mostly western material that
we featured. As time passed, we soon tired of much of
the limited selections at our disposal, and the opinion
was expressed that we sorely needed a new 'opener.' I
had recently viewed the re-release of the movie
Cimarron, starring Richard Dix and Irene Dunne, in which
I noted the absence of a featured number using the
popular title. We were well familiar with the Cimarron
River which runs through the northern part of Oklahoma,
having crossed it many times in out travels. There was a
county by that same name as well as several towns
throughout the area. With all this in mind, I sat myself
down, guitar in hand, with the express purpose of
turning out a song which we could use on our shows. In
the days of live radio, 'Cimarron' was used by many acts
as their opening and closing theme." —Johnny Bond
Cimarron (Roll On)
Cimarron, roll on
To my lonely song
Carry me away
From the skies of gray
Tho' I'm feelin' blue
I'll roll on with you
To the ocean blue
Cimarron, roll on.
